Every year, we receive many calls from hunters and farmers across the province who have encountered injured wildlife in need. We are currently looking for volunteers in some critical areas, listed below. However, we still encourage anyone that is interested to please apply – the more, the merrier! We provide our essential services ALL ACROSS SASKATCHEWAN so we need people everywhere! 🤩

Even if you aren’t interested in handling wildlife, we have other positions such as admin, hotline, fundraising, events and marketing. We also always need transport volunteers that are willing to drive contained animals. Many of these roles are perfect for retirees or students who wish to volunteer their time.

This orientation will provide a great overview of what we do and how you can help. We will also provide relevant training for specific positions if you decide to join us!

We hope you will join us to help keep Saskatchewan’s wildlife wild! 🥰

Every year, thousands of birds in Saskatchewan per

Every year, thousands of birds in Saskatchewan perish from window strikes. Windows are essentially invisible to our little feathered friends! 😢

Just last week, we received a call from the Saskatoon Airport – over a dozen birds had hit a section of their windows, with most of them dying from the impact. Our hotline has also been receiving countless calls from people across the province who need help with windows strikes and injured birds. As birds start to migrate for the winter, we will likely see more and more of these types of calls.

The good news is that these tragedies are actually quite preventable. There are several deterrents you can use to keep birds from hitting windows such as decals, window paint, tape, or screens. If a bird does hit your window, please leave it alone for an hour or two - many of the birds are just stunned. You can also gently place it in a box so it can recover in a quiet place - please do not give it any food or water while its recovering! If the bird does not fly away after two hours, call our hotline immediately.

So if you have a particular window or set of windows that birds tend to hit, please help by using a deterrent. Don’t forget, if you ever need advice our hotline is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily to assist – 306-242-7177! 😍 #animals #rescue #nonprofit #wildlife #saskatchewan

Theo and Roman are now starting the next step in their journey at the rehabber’s house. The ultimate goal is to have these two return to the wild and the best place to do that is with our rehabbers. We are so thankful to have such incredible volunteers and rehabbers that can make this all happen!

The Story of Théo and Roman – Part 6 – Roman eats on his own!

Last time we introduced sweet little Roman – another orphaned raccoon baby that was found in the same area where Theo was. Things are going well for these two brothers. Roman has now started to eat on his own after a few days of being hand fed! We are so proud of their progress and thankful to Peggy and Susan for their amazing love and care.

Our volunteers are truly amazing! 🤩 We just had our busiest summer EVER and we couldn’t have done it without each and every volunteer. To all of the rescuers, transporters, rehabbers, hotline educators and volunteers who helped us this summer – THANK YOU! 🥰

Fun fact: since April 1st, 2020, 658 of our rescues were done by just 10 of our volunteers. The dedication and hard work is truly incredible and inspiring! 😲

We are always looking for new recruits and we officially announced our online volunteer orientation earlier this week - please check out that post here if you are interested in joining us.

WRSOS is a volunteer-run non-profit organization and we run the Wildlife 911 Hotline – a completely FREE service that anyone in Saskatchewan can use. We truly could not keep this essential service running without our volunteers!

Guess what?! Theo has a brother!

Meet Roman, another orphaned baby raccoon from the same area where Theo was found!

Raccoons are social little creatures and do so much better when they are not alone. Roman is currently being weaned and we hope Theo follows along soon! We are just so happy Theo now has a brother to hang out with.

Since his vet visit, Theo is taking medication for his tummy. Peggy thought he had swallowed the blue pill, but as he was playing with his feet, she saw that he had been hiding it in his mouth!

Peggy was able to break it apart and get it in, bit by bit, but as he gets bigger it’s going to be challenging!

Another great bat story - and more amazing work fr

Another great bat story - and more amazing work from our volunteers AND callers! 🤩

We received a call on our hotline from a lady who found this cute bat grounded on her driveway. She coaxed it into a box and then laid the box sideways with it open so the bat could get out. It was still there the next day so she called us!

Our awesome volunteer Penny gave her advice on how to get it up a tree without having to touch it. When the bat got on to the tree it hissed at her and then started to clean itself! Penny then recommended that the caller should put a blanket at the foot of the tree just in case it fell. The next day, the little bat was gone!

This summer has really flown by! It's been our bus

This summer has really flown by! It's been our busiest one yet and we couldn't have done it without the amazing assistance of our hotline educators and interns. ❤️ We are truly grateful for their help and wish them the best of luck in the future! 😍

We were lucky enough to receive grants from the Young Canada Works and the Canada Summer Jobs programs which allowed us to hire our summer students. Luckily, we have been granted additional funds to hire two more bilingual hotline educators for the Fall. Details on how to apply can be found at wrsos.org/careers!

The Story of Théo - Part 1 – Hello world! Thé

The Story of Théo - Part 1 – Hello world!

Théo came into care on August 22, 2020 – he is only 4 to 5 weeks old and currently weighs 450g.

We believe that his mom had moved the litter and left him behind - he was on his own for several days before he was found. We don’t really know why he was left but he could have been the runt or she could have been disturbed during the move.

His eyes are just open and teeth coming in! He misses suckling and will grab anything that seems promising.

Théo will need bottle feeding for at least a couple of weeks before taking on much in the way of solids. He is not yet very mobile but that will change quickly, we hope.

The challenge with Théo will be to get him to the point he can join other raccoons. That is our ultimate goal – to return wildlife to the wild, where they belong!

Over the next few months, we will share Théo’s story as he grows under the wonderful care of our rehabbers Peggy and Susan.

Another awesome #RealRescue! These two young Great

Another awesome #RealRescue! These two young Great Horned Owls were stuck in a bucket truck. They had been there for over 24 hours and were wet from the water that was in it and a little dehydrated from being out in the sun. 🥵

Rehabber Megan from Salthaven West dried and rehydrated these beauties but then they needed to get back to their parents in Wascana Park. Luckily, our volunteer Marissa was available and she helped return them home! 🥰

We are so grateful for our awesome rehabbers and volunteers. Thank you for helping us keep Saskatchewan's wildlife wild!

We have already received more than 3000 calls this year and it looks like it will be our busiest year yet! These statistics really speak for themselves – our Wildlife 911 Hotline has truly become an essential service. Not only is this service FREE – it is run by a non-profit organization that receives no government funding or provincial support.

What would happen without us? We hope we never have to find out!

This #RealRescue features a baby Great Horned Owl

This #RealRescue features a baby Great Horned Owl that was found grounded in a cemetery in Swift Current. The owl was then transported by our volunteers to our friend Megan at Salthaven West in Regina.

Unfortunately, the little one passed away due to congenital defects the day after arriving. We found out that its liver was enlarged, heart too small and its intestines were inflamed. Megan initially believed that the owl was male as it was so small, but it was actually a female and her growth was likely stunted due to all her defects.

While this is a very unfortunate outcome, we are so happy to have been able to help this owl get the care she needed at the end of her life. 😔
